Travelling around different countries, meeting new people, practising languages and getting to know different cultures... Being a backpacker (someone who packs his belongings on his back) is a lifestyle – the best! It means adventure, public transport and it’s the cheapest way of travelling! A British teenager tells us about his backpacking plans for this summer.

Simon (14), from Newcastle, England

My family and I are going to spend two weeks visiting the most famous European cities, such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona and Rome. I can’t wait. We’re going to fly to Amsterdam and then take a train or a coach from one city to another. I think we’re going to sleep two nights in each place – probably in a youth hostela Bed & Breakfast or a guesthouse, but not a hotel! I’m so excited, I think it’s going to be the most extraordinary trip ever!

1. The Salvation Islands (Îles du Salut)

In 1931, Frenchman Henri Charrière was convicted of a murder he did not commit. He was sentenced to life imprisonment at the penal colony on Devil's Island, one of the infamous Îles du Salut. After surviving 12 years of horrific conditions he escaped to Venezuela. The book and movie, Papillon, recount his ordeal. Another famous resident was Alfred Dreyfus.

Today, a trip to the islands, about 11 kilometres offshore from Kourou, brings his story to life. Most arrive at Île Royale, the largest of the three islands and the former administrative headquarters for the colony. The buildings have been converted to hotels and tourist facilities, and an abundant array of wildlife now inhabits the island including macaws, monkeys, and agouti. Île St Joseph was reserved for solitary confinement and Île du Diable (Devil's Island) is now closed to the public. (convicted = condamné – murder = meurtre – ordeal = calvaire – array = collection)
