PRESIDENT TRUMP

On 8 November 2016, Donald J. Trump won the election for the 45th President of the United States of America. He will be inaugurated in January. Who is President Trump?

Donald Trump won the presidency for the Republican Party. In the election, he defeated the Democrat Hillary Clinton, the first woman candidate for President.

Mr Trump is the first U.S. President who doesn’t have experience in elected office, government or military command. He isn’t a politician, he’s a businessman and a reality TV star. At age 70, he is the oldest President to enter the White House.

Business

Mr Trump is very rich. He is a billionaire. His father, Fred, made a fortune building apartments in New York. His mother, Mary, immigrated to the U.S.A. from Scotland. Donald Trump inherited the company from his father. He built hotels, casinos, golf courses and Trump Tower, a famous skyscraper in Manhattan, where he lives and works.

Mr Trump is famous for writing books about business. He was the star of the popular reality TV show The Apprentice from 2004 to 2015. In the show, candidates completed a series of challenges to win a job with the Trump Organization.

Family

Donald Trump is now married to his third wife, Melania, and has five children, aged 10-38, and seven grandchildren. His adult children will be responsible for his company when he is President.

Election Promises

What will the new President want to change in the country? In the election he promised to invest money in infrastructure: building hospitals, schools and roads. He wants to reduce taxes and limit immigration. He has talked about building a wall on the 3200-km long border with Mexico, to stop illegal immigration. He has promised to encourage industry and jobs. And he wants to abandon the reforms President Obama initiated to give all Americans access to medical care and to protect the environment from climate change.
